The Earle of Shrewsbury's letter to my Lord Baltemore.

Whitehall the 15th of Aprill 1689.
My Lord,
I am by his Majesty's Commands to acquaint your Lordship
that his Majesty being sensible of the great and frequent
injuries his subjects dayly receive from the French in ap-
parent violation of the Treaties between the Two Crowns and
particularly by the assistance that King has lately given and
continues to give his enemies in Ireland and by the invading
his Majesty's Territories in America and disturbing the Trade
of his Majesty's subjects in those parts for severall years last
past, his Majesty has therefore directed all necessary Prepara-
tions to be made for a speedy war with the French King,
which has occassioned the giving you this early notice of it that
you may with all possible diligence take effectual care for the
opposing and resisting any attempt of the French upon his
Majesty's Province of Maryland and that you take care that
all Ships coming from thence do not Saile hereafter otherwise
than in Fleets and you are also to assure his Masjesty's sub-
jects in that Province of his Majesty's Protection by sending
forthwith a considerable squadron of ships into the West Indies
and other succours that shall be requisit not only for securing
his Majesty's Plantations in America but obliging the French
to make reparation for the many unjust & violent proceedings
& attempts against his Majesty's subjects in those parts.

declaring against France to which I refer you and have only
further to add that you take care that the hired Ship that
brings this Packett be dispatcht with all speed to Carolina,
which direction I am ordered to give your Lordship least the
