[Barrister Carroll to Council.]

Gentⁿ I have as M^r Tilghman desired in his to me of
Thursday made enquiry for small vessels, but Cannot find that
any are to be got here on freight. I fancy if they are to be
procured it will be down the Bay, the sooner they are got the
better, as I fear the flower now begins to spoil. I was yester-
day down at the fort, they are pretty forward, and the resist-
ance they can now make, if the Enemy should come up, will
not be very inconsiderable we are not in much apprehension of
the Otter or even double her force, but in the Connecticutt
Dialect of old Roger Sherman where is the Powder.

Monday 3^d June 1776.

Met according to Adjournment. Present the same Mem-
bers as on Saturday except M^r Hall and M^r Tilghman.
The Honble William Hayward Esq^r a Member of the
Council attended and was qualified before M^r Hall by taking
the Oath prescribed by the Convention.
Copies of Letter N^o 10 were sent to Brigadier General
Hooper and Chamberlaine, Colonels Mackall, Barnes and
Weems respectively also to Captains Rezin Beall and John
Allen Thomas.
Ordered That the Treasurer of the Western Shore pay to
M^r John Gassaway two hundred Pounds Common money for
the use of Lieutenant Colonel Francis Ware to be accounted for.
Adjourned till next Day 10 O'Clock.

To Brigadiers Chamberlaine & Hooper, Colo^s Wright, Weems,
Mackall & Barnes, & Capt^ns Beall & Thomas (respectively)

Sir.
The Enclosed extract from a letter of Comodore Hamond to
Governor Eden, (in consequence of an intercourse between
his Excellency and the Convention) will inform you, that a
man of war, may be daily expected up the Bay. We give
you this notice that the militia need not be alarmed or unnec-
essarily drawn out upon duty, on sight of these vessels. We
make not the least doubt, but that you will give the orders
necessary for preventing any insult being offered either on
her passage up or down the Bay.
