[Chase to Council.]

Philadelphia Nov. 22^d 1776.
Fryday morning
Gentlemen.
I received from Major Gist the enclosed Return of the Inde-
pendent Companies and Smallwoods Battalion.
I have seen Capt. Ramsey who relates the particulars of the
surrender of Fort Washington in the manner I communicated
to you in my Letter of yesterday evening, of the Maryland
Troops, Colonel Rawlings, Col^o Williams and about 200 of
that Battalion are prisoners. Williams was wounded, with
their men they defended a Pass against the Hessians for two
hours and killed 200 of them, and not as I mentioned, after
they landed across Harlem River, of General Beall's Brigade
160 are prisoners, and Capt. Longs company, he being sick in
the Jerseys. Captain Hardman of Fred^k and his Company
are prisoners. In all the Troops raised in our State above
400 are prisoners.
It is reported General Howe meditates an attack on this

Council met. Present as on yesterday.
Ordered That the Treasurer of the Western Shore pay tc
Nicholas Thomas Esquire Eight pounds eight Shillings for
twelve Days Attendance as a member of the Council, this
Day included.
Ordered That the said Treasurer pay to M^r John Buller
sixty Pounds Currency.
Ordered That the said Treasurer pay to M^r Beriah May
bury ten Pounds Currency.
Copy of Letter N^o 25 was sent to the Committee of Observa
tion for Baltimore County.
Adjourned till Monday morning 10 O' Clock.

day by the Post, which we had not time then to consider; upon
looking them over to day we are of opinion that Vincent Trap
lin and Henry Guyton together with James Bosley and the
