Message from his Ma^tys hon^bLe Councill by the hon^ble Col:
Nicholas Greenberry, and James Frisby Esquire who bring
down the Bills this day sent up.

By his Ex^cy the Gov^r and Councill Sept^r 30^th 1696.

The Message by Major Dent was received and here read,
and it is remarqued that the house thinke that the Proposal!
made for imposing another 3^d on the hh^d was for a pious use,
viz: for building a church at Annapolis for the vse of the
whole Country in Assemblys and Provinciall Courts, and
other publique Meetings. His Ex^cy is pleased to Signifye
that he is not dogmaticall as to imagine his own opinion
therein to be infallible or endued with Eloquence enough to
persuade the house ag^t their own Inclinations or to force
peoples consciencies, Yet his Ex^cy is pleased together with his
Ma^tys hon^ble Councill to assent to what the house has Proposed
thereabout, though they have given no reason ag^t his Ex^cys s^d
Proposall.

As to the latter parte of the Message about interceding
with his Ex^cy to joyne in an address to his Ma^tys for Reliefe of
Severall of his Ma^tys Subjects under penall Navigacon Bonds
His Ex^cy is pleased to say that he can do nothing therein
legally, untill Judgments have been recovered thereon, which
done then he will at present ord^r a Suspension of Executions
issuing, untill his Ma^tys pleasure shall be further knowne.
And that if his Ma^tys hon^ble Councill and house of Bur-
gesses shall thinke fitt to address his Ma^ty at Present, his Ex^cy
will not faile of being as good as his word in affording his
Interest &c.
