The Upper House. 315

To his Excellency Samuel Ogle Esqr Governor and Commander
in Chief in & over the Province of Maryland
The humble Address of the Upper House of Assembly

May it please your Excellency
We are so sensible of your Excellencys kind Disposition for the
Welfare of this Province, that we beg Your Excellency to accept
Our most sincere thanks for this Opportunity of Settling the Or-
dinary Business; for we are sufficiently perswaded, your indulgent
Care alone (not to omitt any Occasion which may contribute to our
happiness) could be the only motive of calling us together in As-
sembly; Your Excellency having not received an Answer from his
Lordship to Our joint Address, nor having any thing at present to
recommend to us
And if your Excellency's readiness in General for the Good of
Maryland so justly challenges a Return of Our thanks, We must not
be wanting in Our Expressions of being most particularly obliged,
by your generous Assurance of your Excellency's hearty Assistance
to what may extraordinarily arise in Our Consideration for the
Service of the Country: Your Excellency has convinced us of the
Great Pleasure you take in promoting the Welfare and Prosperity

of the Province by the frequent Instances of your Acting for that
Next to the Happiness which immediately results from the well
digested Councils of a Legislature is the little Expence and Charge

in this Point so well pressed on Us by your Excellency's Recom-
mendation cannot fail meeting with Our Endeavours towards lessen-
ing the Publick Levy for the Ease of poor People
