72 Journal and Correspondence

September I

In Council 12th September 1777.
Job Greene, George Somervell, George Isley and William Ford
all of Baltimore County and who were comitted to the Custody of
the Sheriff of the County aforesaid, were according to Order brought
before the Governor and Council and it appearing to the Governor
and Council that there is good grounds to believe the going at large
of the said Job Greene, George Somervell George Isley & William
Ford may be dangerous to the Safety of this State, it is therefore
ordered the said several persons be confined in the Publick Prison
of Baltimore County during the present Invasion of this State, or
untill the further Order of the Governor and Council herein,
p order J. Johnson Jnr Cl

On the 27th of December following I was released from Prison
on my signing a Bond with two securities in the Penalty of two
thousand pounds, the condition of which was that I should in all
things demean and behave myself as a good and faithfull Subject
of this State & should not goe out of Baltimore County without the
leave of the Governor and Council of this State first obtained in
writing, since which I have desired several Gentlemen to make ap-
plication to your Honours to grant my securities & myself a release-
ment from said Bond, who have severally brought me a visible
answer that you had no objection to giving it up, but that it could
not at the Present time be found, trusting to your Honours known
wisdom and impartiality & not doubting but you would on a proper
application suffer said Bond to be cancelled. I have disposed of most
of the effects I have in this place, with an intention of Setling in
the Island of St Eustatius where I propose to goe with your appro-
bation by the very first oppertunity. as I have paid all taxes due from
me to the State and am convinced in my own mind, that I have not
transgressed any Law of the State & have with resignation bore
confinement both in Prison and since that to the County. And am
convinced that no person can lay anything criminal to my charge,
except not enrolling in the Militia & not taking the Oath of Allegi-
ance to the State, but have paid all taxes and burthens whatever
since the commencement of the present times. I have the fullest con-
fidence in your Honours moderation & firm but benevolent principles
