worthys Giving four hundred & fifty pound a Barl for it in this
County, I have Ingaged Sixty Cattle, and hope in a few clays to
make up a Drove of One hundred, If I can only Be furnished with
Cash to pay for them, I am afraid we shall not be able to get many
Cattle, heare that is fit to Drive as the Cattle is Generaly young &
small, sum Cattle may be had upon Certificate if the Collectors would
Receive their Certificates in payment of the present assesment.
Our people do not seem fond of Dealing in new mony: they ask
me from Eighty to a hundred pounds pr hundred for Beef in the
common money I have not yet made them any offers, Untill I heare
from you, and have Your Direction what to give in Common, Cir-
culating money. I am afraid we shall get no more pork, at the price
Limitted, as the people Inform me they Can have Two hundred
Dollars a barrel more for their pork: at their own Dores Ten Barels
of what I got this week I allowed £400 for it being Excellent and
Repacked with allom Salt the same man had Ten Bar: more that
he offered me for £ 450: I hope that will not be allow'd as others
will think hard if they have not a hier price if he gets that.
Sundry of Our Genta have offered to Inshure and Deliver Corn
at Trentown for the same that the Corn Shipt by the head of Elk
Cost or for the same that the Comesary at Philadelphia give in
reddy Cash for the Armey this they will do on Certificates if your
Excellency & Co will only Direct me to ship it that way, and on
these Conditions I am Convinced I should get a Considerable
Quantity sent forward that way, I shall Ship Near Two thousand
Bhs. of Corn & near forty Bars pork at Snow hill & Salesbury this
week, as I heare the Crusars is Gone down the Bay, but for fear of
their Return I am In hopes You will send down sum Vesels to Cover
them, I have been Oblidge to Call on my Bro: Geo. Dashiell the
Lieut of Somerset for several Thousand pounds to assist me to pay
for provision, hope you will Give me an Order on him for Ten
Thousand pounds or what you please, as I am Under Sundry In-
gagements that I am afraid I Cannot Comply with as our people
pay their Class money Very Slowly
I submit it to your Excellency, wheather we had not Better take
Beaff on the Hoof for the Class mony I am fully Perswaded that
I should get many good Cattle by it, and save the mony in hand.
I am sorry to Inform you that no mony will Be obtained here
upon Lone, as I have Called on all my Brethren in that way and find
they have got no more but what I informed you off, when I was
Last at Annapolis. As soon as I make up a drove of One hundred
Cattle I shall send them forward to the head of Elk. The Collectors
of the Tax have not been Able to pay me one Shilling Yet they say
Every one pay their Taxes in Certificates.
I hope the Barer Mr Price will bring me sum Cash to keep up my
Credit, which I Can only barely Soport at Present. I sent you
