TROOPERS.

Carbines, Pistols, Holsters and Ammunition.  Ibid.
§. 4.
    3. Every Trooper neglecting to appear at Muster,
on Notice given, accoutred as aforesaid, shall forfeit
100 lb Tobacco, to the Use of the Troop, for purchasing
Trumpets, Colours, &c.  Ibid.
    4.  Troopers, when out a Ranging, shall find their
own Provision; but when in actual Service, shall be
found Provisions at the Charge of the Public.  Ibid.

TWO COUNTY MAGISTRATES.

    1.  On the Death or removal of any Constable, or
Refusal, &c. to qualify, any Two next Justices may
forthwith appoint another.  See Constables, 4.
    2.  Two County Magistrates may take the acknowledgment
of any Conveyance of Land, &c.  See Conveyances, 4, 5.
    3.  Any Two County Justices on Complaint of Indians,
may go upon their Lands, and finding their
Complaint to be true, may issue their Warrant to the
Sheriff to put out any intruding Persons, and deliver
peaceable Possession to the Indians.  See Indians Lands, 
17.
    4.  Two County Magistrates may take Inspectors

Bonds.  See Inspectors, 12.
    5.  Two Justices may take Probat of a County
Clerk's Bond.  See Records, 3.
    6.  Two County Justices may take Special Bail on

VESTRY.

    1.  Select Vestries to be in every Parish, and the
Number of Vestrymen to be always Six at the least.
1702, ch. 1, §. 7.
    2.  The Incumbent for the Time being in every
Parish, and residing therein, shall be one of the Vestry,
and Principal thereof, tho' there be Six or more besides.
Ibid.  §. 9.
    3.  In case of Death, Resignation, or other legal
Discharge of any Vestryman, the Freeholders Inhabitants
of the Parish, shall be summoned by the remaining
Part of the Vestry to elect (by a Majority of
Voices) some sober, discreet Freeholder of the same

Parish to supply the Vacancy.  Ibid.  §. 7.
    4.  Vestrymen, so chosen, shall take the Oaths to
the Government, and also the Oath of a Vestryman,
and subscribe the Test; and having so done, and not
before, shall be deemed Vestrymen.  Ibid.  (See also
1715, ch. 30, §. 4.)
    5.  The Oaths on the Election of a New Vestry,
shall be administered by some Justice of the County,
&c.  But on Elections afterwards shall be administered
either by a County Magistrate, or by the first
Vestryman.  Ibid.
    6.  Two new Vestrymen shall be annually chosen

(in the Place of Two others who shall be left out) by
Election of all the Freeholders within the Parish who
shall think fit to repair to the Parish Church on

VESTRY.

Easter-Monday, yearly.  Which Persons so elected,
on taking the Oaths, &c. shall become Members of
the Vestry.  Ibid.  §. 8.
    7.  The Two eldest Vestrymen shall be annually
left out, nor shall either of them be liable to be chosen,
or obliged to serve, for Three Years next ensuing.
1730, ch. 23, §. 2.
    8.  Any Person elected a Vestryman, and refusing

or neglecting (on convenient Notice given him by
the Register, who is required to give such Notice on

Penalty of 1000 lb Tobacco) to be present at the next
Meeting of the Vestry, and there to qualify as a 
Vestryman (without a reasonable Excuse) shall forfeit
1000 lb Tobacco.  Which Fine, as well as that on
the Register as aforesaid, shall be recoverable in his
Lordship's Name, in the County Court, and applied
to the Use of the parish.  And every acting Vestryman
or Register is required to inform the next County
Court of such Refusal or Neglect; which Court shall

order Prosecution.  Ibid.  §. 2 and 5.
    9.  But Persons publicly known to be of any Religious
Profession different from the Church of England
established by Law, shall not be liable to such Choice
or Penalties.  Ibid.  §. 6.
    10.  The Vestry are impowered and directed to proceed
to the Choice and Election of some other Person
in the Place of any one chosen a Vestryman, and refusing
or neglecting to act as aforesaid.  And the former

Choice of such Person so refusing, &c. shall be
void.  Ibid.  §. 3.

    11.  Each Vestry shall appoint a fit Persons for a Register
or Clerk, and may allow him any Quantity not
exceeding 1000 lb Tobacco yearly; which they may
raise (on Application to the County Court) by equal
Assessment on the taxable Parishioners.  1702, ch. 1,
§. 10; and 1730, ch. 23, §. 7.
    12.  The Register, so appointed, shall take the Oaths
to the Government, &c. and also on Oath, to be given
him by the Vestry, for the due and faithful executing
his Office, before he shall be admitted into the same.

    13.  The Register shall keep a true and fair Registry
of all Vestry Proceedings, and make just and true Entries
thereof, and of all Births, Marriages and Burials,
(Negroes and Mulattoes excepted,) with their respective
Dates; and shall have Six-pence for every such Entry.

    14.  Parents, Guardians, Overseers, Masters, &c. of
Persons Born, Married, or Buried, shall give Notice to
the Register within Two Months after such Marriage,
Birth, or Burial, and pay him the Fee for entering it;
on Penalty of 100 lb Tobacco, for neglecting or refusing
so to do.  And the Register refusing or neglecting
to make such Entry, (having received his Fee for the
same,) shall forfeit 100 lb Tobacco.  Ibid.
    15.  The Fines in the preceding Article are to be
recovered before a single Magistrate:  One Moiety to
the Parish Charge, and the other to the Informer.

    16.  The Register or Clerk shall shew such Register
of Births, &c. to any person reasonably requiring it,

and give Certificate of any Births, Marriages or Burials,
required, and shall have Six-pence for every
Search, and Six-pence for every Certificate.  Registers
of Births, &c. heretofore made by County Clerks,
under former laws, are confirmed.  1702, ch. 1,
§. 10.
    17. Register-Books, well bound and sufficient, shall
be provided, where wanting, by the Vestry, at the
Parish Charge, within Six Months from the End of
this Session; on Penalty of 500 lb Tobacco each Vestryman
neglecting, the Minister only excepted.  Ibid.
§. 11.
    18.  Vestries are obliged to meet once a Month, or
as oft as Need shall require, on Public Notice given
by the principal Vestryman.  And no Vestryman,
