dustrial employer in the United States. Over a four-year period,
from 1958 to 1962, employment in the missile-space industry has
increased 123 per cent while auto-makers increased their employment
only 19 per cent. Nearly 28, 000 Marylanders owe their jobs to the
fart that the missile space industry has located at least sixteen estab-
lishments within our State—and this does not include federal govern-
ment installations. The United States Department of Labor estimates
that Maryland workers in this particular science-industry represent be-
tween two-and-a-half to five per cent of the total employment in the
missile-space activity.

Let me assure you again of my great interest in your endeavors.
Your cooperation and effort are almost certainly an investment in Mary-
land's future and, I might add, the national interest.

REMARKS AT DEDICATION OF
"ANNAPOLIS SCIENCE CENTER"

ANNAPOLIS
July 9, 1964

Taking part in the ceremonies marking the opening of a new in-
dustry is always a pleasant duty for a Governor, but today's occasion
is especially gratifying for me for several reasons.

First, we are dedicating today the first science center in our State's
capital city. Science-industry, as you know, has become one of the
mainstays of Maryland's economy., and we are making a special effort
to make certain that our State continues to provide the facilities, the
skills, and the cultural climate that such industries need. The An-
napolis Science Center will contribute importantly to this effort, and
will thus help us maintain Maryland's position as one of the top three
research and development areas in the United States.

The second reason why this is a special occasion for me is that I
am privileged to announce to you today the establishment in the Hydra-
search Company Building by the United States Public Health Service
of a unit of scientists to maintain constant vigilance over the quality
of the waters of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. Nothing
is more important to Maryland in more ways than the Chesapeake
Bay, and on behalf of the people of Maryland, I want to publicly
thank the United States Public Health Service for this new installation.
