In reply to a Complimentary Resolution unanimously
adopted;
Lieutenant Governor Cox, addressed the Senate as follows:
I need hardly assure you Senators, that I feel profoundly
sensible to this most unexpected expression of your approval
of my official acts. The generous courtesy thus extended I
shall bear with me into the future, and always cherish among
the proudest and most grateful recollections of my life.
With limited experience in the sphere of duty to which I
have been called by the voice of the people, and conscious,
therefore, of many defects as a Presiding officer, I can, nev-
ertheless, solemnly and conscientiously aver that these have
been of the head and not the heart. Uninfluenced by mo-
tives of personal friendship, or party bias, it has been my
honest endeavor to mete out equal and impartial justice to
each and to all.
I have certainly, cause for self-gratulation that I have been
so liberally supported by the intelligent body over which I
have had the honor to preside. Surely no public functionary
ever had the good fortune to be connected with a more digni-
fied, able and courteous assembly than the present Senate of
Maryland. Proud indeed is the consciousness that at this
midnight hour, the few remaining moments of the session,
ebbing rapidly away, .no heartburnings, no broken friend-
ships, linger in the circle around me. If at times in the
heat of debate, ardent feelings have been elicited, or harsh.
expressions dropped from lips prompted by impulsive hearts,
these have been soon forgotten in the speedy and virtuous
reaction of magnanimous bosoms. No-estrangements, but
only sentiments of kind and universal regard survive the ex-
citements of the intellectual arena,
