This institution was established in 1870 as the House of Reforma-
tion for Colored Boys. In 1937, when the property was purchased
by the State, it became known as The Cheltenham School for Boys.
The present name was adopted in 1949 by legislative authority (Acts
1949, chap. 692). The school provides for the care and training of
delinquent colored boys. During the fiscal year of 1955 it provided
care for 405 boys committed to the school and 353 boys who were
detained there.
