The State Board of Cosmetologists, created by Chapter 282, Acts of
1936 as the Board of Hairdressers and Beauty Culturists, received its
present name by Chapter 278, Acts of 1961. The Board consists of
three members appointed by the Governor for three-year terms. All
members of the Board must have had at least five years' practical
experience in hairdressing or beauty culture. They may not be affili-
ated with any firm manufacturing or selling any merchandise or com-
modity used in beauty shops, nor be directly or indirectly connected
with any school of beauty culture. No two members shall serve at the
same time who are graduates of the same school of beauty culture.
The Board examines, licenses, and registers all persons engaged in
or teaching hairdressing and beauty culture within the State. It super-
vises all beauty shops and schools of beauty culture in the State in all
matters pertaining to health and sanitation. The Board may issue
regulations, conduct hearings, administer oaths, and compel the attend-
ance of witnesses. It holds examinations, both practical and written,
once every month or more often when necessary. The examinations
are usually held in Baltimore (Code 1967, 1965 Repl. Vol., Art. 43,
sees. 539-65).

BOARD OF EXAMINERS FOR HEARING AID DEALERS

The Board of Examiners for Hearing Aid Dealers, created by Chap-
ter 634, Acts of 1969, consists of five members appointed by the Gov-
ernor with the advice and consent of the Senate for five-year terms.
The Governor designates the Chairman. One member must be licensed
to practice medicine in Maryland and hold a certificate of qualification
from the American Board of Otolaryngology. One member must hold
a certificate of competence in audiology from the American Speech
and Hearing Association and have had at least four years of paid
work experience in audiology prior to his appointment. The remaining
three members must be persons experienced in the sale of hearing
aids and be recommended by the Maryland members of the Hearing
Aid Dealers Association of Maryland, the District of Columbia, ana
Delaware.
The Board registers and regulates persons furnishing hearing aids.
It also tests audiometric testing equipment and inspects the facilities
of persons who practice the fitting of hearing aids (Code 1957, 1965
Repl. Vol., 1969 Supp., Art. 43, sees. 725-742).
