By Chapter 909, Acts of 1978, the State Board of
Occupational Therapy Practice was created to
administer, coordinate, and enforce the provisions
of the Maryland Occupational Therapy Practice
Act. The Board evaluates the qualifications of
applicants for licensure, and supervises the exami-
nations of applicants. It keeps a current list of
licensed occupational therapists and occupational
therapy assistants.

The Board consists of five members appointed
for three-year terms by the Governor on the
recommendation of the Secretary of Health and
Mental Hygiene. The Board includes three licensed
occupational therapists, one licensed occupational
therapy assistant, and one consumer member,
appointed with the advice and consent of the
Senate, who cannot have been trained as an
occupational therapist or have a financial interest
in a related field. Occupational therapy members
are appointed from a list of nominees submitted by
the Maryland Occupational Therapy Association.

Authorization for the Board continues until July
1, 1994 (Code Health Occupations Article, secs,
9-201 through 9-502).

Created by Chapter 652, Acts of 1914, the Board
of Examiners in Optometry administers the optom-
etry laws of the State and regulates the practice of
optometry. It examines, licenses, and registers
applicants, and for just cause the Board may
revoke any certificate of registration or examina-
tion.

The Board consists of six persons appointed by
the Governor upon the recommendation of the
Secretary of Health and Mental Hygiene for five-
year terms from a list submitted by the Maryland
Association of Optometrists. The sixth member is a
consumer, appointed by the Governor on the
recommendation of the Secretary with the advice
and consent of the Senate, who cannot have
training as an optometrist or a financial interest in
a related field.

The State Board of Pharmacy, created by Chap-
ter 179, Acts of 1902, licenses pharmacists by
examination and reciprocity. It also conducts a
biennial re-registration program for pharmacists.
The Board issues permits for the operation of retail
pharmacies and for the manufacture of drugs,
medicines, toilet articles, dentifrices, and cosmet-
ics. The Board also licenses jobbers, distributors,
and wholesalers or manufacturers of dangerous
(prescription) drugs. In cooperation with the De-
partment of Health and Mental Hygiene, the
Board enforces the pharmacy and drug laws of the
State.

Board members and duly authorized agents of
the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene
inspect all pharmacies or other places where
prescriptions, medicines, drugs, drug products, or
domestic remedies are compounded or sold. They
also inspect prescriptions, medicines, drugs, drug
products, or domestic products exposed for sale.
Druggists and pharmacists are required to keep in
their places of business a suitable book or file in
which to preserve for a period of not less than five
years every prescription compounded or dispensed.

The Board consists of eight members. Six are
skilled pharmacists and two arc consumer repre-
sentatives. All are appointed by the Governor upon
recom'mendation of the Secretary of Health and
Mental Hygiene for five-year terms. Each pharma-
cist member of the Board is selected from a list of
recommendations submitted by the Maryland
Pharmaceutical Association. The consumer mem-
bers are appointed with the advice and consent of
the Senate and cannot have had training as a
pharmacist or have a financial interest in a related
field. Two members must be residents of Baltimore
City, two must be residents of the counties of the
State, and three must be from the State at large.
The Board may designate an executive director.
