The Board consists of six members appointed to
five-year terms by the Governor with the advice of
the Secretary of Health and Mental Hygiene, five
are licensed physical therapists; of these, at least
four must be engaged primarily in the clinical prac-
tice of physical therapy. Each physical therapist
member must be engaged in the profession of phys-
ical therapy in Maryland and, immediately prior to
appointment, must have at least five years experi-
ence in physical therapy administration, edutauuii,
practice, or research. Physical therapist members
are recommended by the American Physical Ther-
apy Association of Maryland. The sixth member is
a consumer appointed with Senate advice and con-
sent. The consumer member cannot have had train-
ing as a physical therapist or have a financial interest
in a related field. Authorization for the Board con-
tinues until July 1, 1992 (Code Health Occupa-
tions Article, secs. 13-101 through 13-502).

The State Board of Podiatric Medical Examiners
was created in 1916 as the State Board of Chirop-
ody Examiners (Chapter 173, Acts of 1916). In
1965, it became the State Board of Podiatry Exam-
iners (Chapter 416, Acts of 1965). The Board was
renamed the State Board of Podiatric Medical Ex-
aminers in 1986 (Chapter 243, Acts of 1986).

The Board examines all persons who wish to
practice podiatry in the State. Examinations, which
may be written, oral, or practical, are given twice
yearly Applicants must have at least two years of
education in a recognized college of arts and sci-
ences and be graduates of a college of podiatric
medicine recognized by the American Podiatry As-
sociation. The Board biennially licenses podiatrists
in active practice within the State. The Board may,
after a hearing, revoke the license of any podiatrist
charged with malpractice or unethical conduct.

The Board consists of six members appointed by
the Governor with the advice of the Secretary of
Health and Mental Hygiene. Five are licensed po-
diatrists recommended by the Maryland Podiatric
Medical Association. One is a consumer appointed
with Senate advice and consent. Members serve
five-year terms. Authorization for the Board

The State Board of Examiners of Professional
Counselors was created in 1985 (Chapter 734, Acts
of 1985). The Board certifies professional counsel-
ors and regulates professional counseling services
within the State.

The Board consists of six members appointed by
the Governor with the advice of the Secretary of
Health and Mental Hygiene. Five members are
certified professional counselors or persons eligible
to be certified; all of these members must be certi-
fied by July 1, 1989. The sixth member is a con-
sumer who is not trained as a professional counselor
nor has participated in a related field, and has no
substantial financial interest in a person regulated
by the Board. The consumer member may not have
a household member who is a professional coun-
selor or in training to become one. Nor may a
member of the consumer's household participate in
a related field. Members serve three-year terms.
Authorization for the Board continues until July 1,
1989 (Code Health Occupations Article, secs.
15.5-101 through 15.5-502).

The practice of psychology in Maryland is
regulated by the State Board of Examiners of
Psychologists. Established in 1957, the Board eval-
uates the qualifications of psychologists in the State
and issues licenses to those who fulfill the require-
ments (Chapter 748, Acts of 1957). Licenses must
be renewed biennially. The Board administers exam-
inations to qualified applicants for licensing at least
twice each year. The Board maintains a roster of
psychologists licensed in the State.
