The Handgun Permit Review Board was created
in 1972 (Chapter 13, Acts of 1972).

Any person whose application for a handgun
permit or renewal of a permit has been rejected or
whose permit has been revoked or limited may ask
the Board to review the decision of the Superinten-
dent of the Maryland State Police. The Board can
either sustain, reverse, or modify the decision of the
Superintendent, or conduct a hearing to establish
the facts.

From the general public, the Governor appoints
the Board's five members with Senate advice and
consent. Members serve three-year terms (Code
1957, Art. 27, sec. 36E).

The Handgun Roster Board was created in 1988
(Chapter 533, Acts of 1988). The Board compiles,
maintains, and publishes the Handgun Roster,
which lists those handguns manufactured after Jan-
uary 1,1985, that may be sold or offered for sale in
Maryland. It is illegal in Maryland to sell or offer for
sale a handgun manufactured after January 1,1985,
that is not on the Handgun Roster. By July 1,1989,
and semiannually thereafter, the Handgun Roster
will be published in the Maryland Register.

The Board consists of nine members appointed
to four-year terms by the Governor with Senate
advice and consent. The Superintendent of the
Maryland State Police serves as chairperson (Code
1957, Art. 27, secs. 36F, 361, 36J).

The Department administers the Data Center
for public safety, law enforcement, and correctional
agencies within the State. Created in 1970, the
Center provides data processing services to the
State Police, Division of Correction, Division of
Parole and Probation, Patuxent Institution, State
Fire Marshal, and several federal and local criminal
justice agencies. The Center provides computer ter-
minal and computer-to-computer data transmis-
sion between these agencies and the Federal Bureau
of Investigation, the National Law Enforcement
Telecommunications System, and the State Motor
Vehicle Administration.
