The Museum Assistance Review Panel was
created in 1990 (Chapter 322, Acts of 1990). The
Panel reviews and recommends to the Secretary of
Housing and Community Development the ap-
proval of grants under the Historical and Cultural
Museum Assistance Program. In reviewing grant
applications that relate to the care of, preservation
of, or access to archival material, the Panel seeks the
advice and recommendations of the State Archivist.
The Panel includes members appointed by the
Secretary of Housing and Community Develop-
ment and three ex officio members (Code 1957,
Art. 83B, sees. 5-701 through 5-705).

The Banneker/Douglass Museum of Afro-
American Life and History opened to the public in
February 1984. The Museum is both an exhibit
facility and a research center for studies in Afro-
American history and culture.

The Jefferson Patterson Historical Park and
Museum at St. Leonard, Calvert County, opened to
the public in 1984. The Park extends along two and
1/2 miles of shoreline on the Pacuxent River and St.
Leonard's Creek. It is located on the 512-acre Point
Farm, which was deeded to the State by Mary
Marvin Breckinridge Patterson in honor other hus-
band, Jefferson Patterson. Here scientists have
found evidence of prehistoric Indian sites, 10 to 12
million-year-old invertebrate fossils, and remnants

of early European settlements. The Park and
Museum will be developed over the next ten years
as an educational, research and recreational facility.

committee under the Maryland Historical Trust.
The Committee provides oversight and advice
regarding operational and development planning of
the Jefferson Patterson Historical Park and
Museum.

Historic St. Mary's City was Maryland's first
settlement and for sixty-one years its colonial capi-
tal. It is one of three heritage parks and museums
operated by the Division of Historical and Cultural
Programs.
Through the work of the St. Mary's City Com-
mission, Historic St. Mary's City Park was com-
pleted in 1984, the year Maryland celebrated its
350th anniversary. There is an admission fee for the
Park and special group rates can be arranged in
advance.
