Baltimore City Community College originated in
1947 when Baltimore Junior College was established.
The College was reformed as the Community College
of Baltimore in 1968. As the New Community Col-
lege of Baltimore, it was made a State institution of
higher education in 1990 (Chapter 220, Acts of
1990). In 1992, the school received its present name
(Chapter 208, Acts of 1992).
Baltimore City Community College offers pro-
grams for associate degrees and certificates in more
than thirty fields, including computer information,
electronics, nursing, business, allied health, legal as-
sisting, and office technology. In addition to job train-
ing and transfer programs, the College offers extensive
noncredit programs in basic literacy, General Educa-
tion Development (G.E.D.) test preparation, and
English as a second language. The College also works
to meet the needs of Baltimore employers through
courses and programs at its downtown Business and
Continuing Education Center.
With a faculty of 120 full-time and over 500
part-time instructors, the College annually serves
more than 8,000 students at the Liberty Heights
campus, the Harbor campus, and many other sites
throughout Baltimore.
The College is governed by a nine-member
Board of Trustees, appointed by the Governor with
Senate advice and consent. Eight members serve

six-year terms. A student member serves a one-year
term. The Board of Trustees appoints the President
of the College (Code Education Article, secs. 16-
601 through 16-610).

The Bicycle Advisory Committee was formed in
December 1991 (Chapter 624, Acts of 1991). The
Committee advises State government agencies on
funding bicycle-related programs; public education
and awareness of bicycling activities and safety; and
other bicycling issues.
