Ordered, That when this House adjourn to-day, it stand ad-
journed until 11 o'clock to-morrow morning.
The bill, entitled an Act relating to fences in Wicomico
County,
Was read a second time and ordered to be engrossed for
a third reading.
The Speaker laid before the House the following commu-
nication from the Hon. John W. Davis, State Treasurer-
elect:
ANNAPOLIS, January 16, 1872.
To the Son. Henry Snyder,
President of the Senate, and
The Hon. A. P. German,
Speaker of the House of Delegates of Maryland:
Gentlemen—I have received your letter informing me of
my election to the office of Treasurer of the State.
I beg that you will return my grateful acknowledgments
to the Legislature for the honor which it has conferred upon
me, and that you will communicate to that Body my accept-
ance of the office.
I shall endeavor to discharge its duties in a manner satis-
factory to the Legislature and the people of the State, and,
although I shall not again be a candidate at the close of my
term of office, I trust that my official career will be found to
have deserved approval.
I have the honor to he,
With great respect,
Your obedient servant,
JOHN W. DAVIS.
Which was read.
On motion of Mr. Stewart,
The House then proceeded to the consideration of the
order of the day, being the order submitted by Mr. Stewart
on Friday last, directing the Board of Police Commissioners.
of Baltimore City to report to this House on or before the.
24th instant.
The question recurring on the adoption of the order,.
The order was then adopted,
The hour of 12 o'clock noon having arrived, the House, in
accordance with the Act of Congress, 1866, Chapter 245,
entitled an Act to regulate the times and manner of holding
elections for Senators in Congress, proceeded to hold. an elec-
