MISCELLANIA
Van Buren, nicknamed, "The Fox of Kinder-
hook" established improvements in labor
conditions, reducing the federal employees'
hours to ten. He is credited with the ability
to rise above politics to statesmanship when
crises so demanded. Defeated for re-election,
he was again nominated in 1848 by the Free
Soil Party but did not win a single electoral
vote.
No vice presidential candidate received a
majority of electoral votes; the Senate se-
lected Johnson the Vice President under the
provisions of the 12th Amendment - the
only time in history.
