Union armies. Grant inherited the presi-
dency almost as a right. At 46 he was the
youngest to reach this position. He drank ex-
cessively and was not equipped to govern
our nation; in spite of this, the Republicans
pressed him to try for a second term, which
he won. Scandal which touched his first four
years flourished in the second term.
