                                Proceedings
                              of the Electors
                                      of
                    President and Vice President
                  of the United States of America
                  in and for the State of Maryland
                                  -1856-

    On the first Wednesday of December being the third day
of the said month in the year one thousand eight hundred
and fifty six the day appointed by the Constitution and
Laws of the United States on which the Electors of President
and Vice President of the United States of America
are directed to assemble and perform the trust reposed
in them, there appeared in the Senate Chamber in the
City of Annapolis (the place designated by Act of
Assembly for the meeting of said Electors) the following
gentlemen who had been proclaimed by the Executive
Authority of this State to have been duly Elected Electors
of President and Vice President of the United States in
and for the State of Maryland to wit:
                J. Dixon Roman            of Washington County
                James Wallace              of Dorchester County
                Robert Goldsborough    of Queen Anns County
                Frederick A. Schley      of Frederick County
                Edwin H. Webster         of Harford County
                Thomas Swann              of Baltimore City
                Cornelius L. L. Leary     of Baltimore City
        The said Electors severally qualified by taking the oath
prescribed by the Constitution to be taken by all civil officers,
and by declaring their belief in the Christian religion.
        On motion of Mr. Swann Frederick A. Schley was
unanimously chosen President.
        On motion of Mssrs. Goldsborough Chapman Harwood
was unanimously appointed Secretary who duly qualified
as such.
        On motion of Mr. Goldsborough John T. Wright
was appointed Door Keeper and James Thomas Messenger
who severally qualified.
        Augustus N. Sollers Esq. who had been duly proclaimed
by the Executive Authority of the State, elected one of the
Electors of President and Vice President of the United
