REPORT OF THE COMPTROLLER OF THE TREASURY. xi

From Registers of Wills there was received, as shown in
Table No. 2. the sum of $119,723.98 being $6,540.31 less than
was received the previous fiscal year.

From Collectors of State Taxes in the several counties and
the City of Baltimore there was received $875,158.89, being
less than for the previous year by $17,151.27.

From Railroads and other Corporations there was received
as[a tax on their gross receipts for the fiscal year 1894, as shown
in Table No. 5, the sum of $136,266.30, an excess of $13,240.66
over the previous fiscal year.

Table No. 6 shows the receipts from the tax on the shares
of the capital stock of Incorporated Institutions to be $86,-
215.88, being less than for the previous year by $20,886.55.
This loss is more than accounted for in Table No. 12, showing
receipts from Franchise Tax upon deposits in Savings Banks,
which were included in this Table, prior to the Act of 1894.

STATE TOBACCO INSPECTIONS.

Table No. 7 shows in detail the receipts and disburse-
ments on account of the State Tobacco Warehouses for the
fiscal year 1894 :

Gross receipts..............................................,$ 61,098.87

Disbursements on account of Salaries, &c............ 55,783.63

Net earnings during fiscal year.................. 5,315.24

Amount paid into State Treasury.........$ 2,621,04

Balance due September 3oth, 1894......... 2,69420 5,315.24

This balance has since been paid into the State Treasury.

Table No. 11 shows the receipts into the Treasury from
licenses and tax upon premiums paid by Insurance Compa-
nies as returned by the Insurance Commissioner, amounting
to $121,002.90, being an increase of $2,340.03 over the receipts
from the same source for the preceding fiscal year.

Table No. 12 shows the receipts from franchise tax upon
the deposits in Savings Banks and Institutions, amounting to
$25,554.90.

Tables Nos. 13 to 17, both inclusive, show the amounts
due to the State, exclusive of interest, from Clerks of Courts,
Registers of Wills and Sheriffs, and State taxes remaining un-
