SM1 BIOGRAPHIES

appropriated money to erect a monument to mark
his grave in Charles County. PERSONAL PROP-
ERTY: TEV, £4,761.6.7 current money (including
26 slaves, 53 oz. plate, French plate valued at
£200.0.0, 1 whaleboat, and 1 barge); FB, estate
overpaid £44.2.11. At an estate sale in November
1792, silver and gold watches and other items of
jewelery belonging to Smallwood were sold. His
personal property was appraised at £2,303.8.10
and sold for £1,564.16.9 . LAND: ca. 9,500 acres
in Charles, Frederick, and Allegany counties, plus
ca. 2,000 acres in King George, Stafford, and
Culpeper counties, Virginia. ADDITIONAL COM-
MENT: At his death William Smallwood owed more
than £3,000.0.0, plus 15,000 Ibs. of tobacco, to
his creditors. His personal estate did not cover
more than a third of his debts, and his adminis-
trators and heirs were sued for the right to have
his real estate sold to satisfy his debts. In 1798,
the chancellor recommended that Smallwood's
real property be sold, noting that it would require
£17,500 at that point to discharge the obligations
against the estate.

SMITH, ALEXANDER HAMILTON (ca. 1748-
1784). BORN: ca. 1748, in Calvert County. NA-
TIVE: at least third generation. RESIDED: in the
1st District, Calvert County, by 1783. FAMILY
BACKGROUND. FATHER: Maj. John Smith (ca. 1719-
1759), son of John Smith (?-1738). MOTHER: Mary
Hamilton, daughter of Dr. John Hamilton. HALF
UNCLE: Thomas Sheredine (1699-1752). AUNTS:
Sarah Smith, who married second, Joseph Hall
(ca. 1701 -?); Rachel Smith, who married Thomas
Gantt (ca. 1710-1785). BROTHERS: Dr. John
Hamilton; William Hamilton (1742-1764), Gent.,
of Calvert County, who married Barbara Bond;
Philemon (?-1772), who married Betty (last name
unknown); and Gavin Hamilton, who married
Rachel Lane. MARRIED on February 10, 1767, Mary
(1750-1793), daughter of Richard Chew (1716-
1769) and wife Sarah Lock (Loch) (1721-1791),
who was the widow of Samuel Chew (1709-1749).
Mary was the niece of Ann Chew (1707-1777),
who married Philip Thomas (1693/94-1762). Her
brothers were Samuel (1755-1785); Lock (Locke)
(1757-1793); Francis (1760-?); Philemon Lloyd
(1765-?), who married Ann (1767-1827), daugh-
ter of William Bowie (1721-1791); and Richard
(1753-1801), who married first, in 1773, Mar-
garet (1755-1799), daughter of James John Mackall
(1717-1772), and second, in 1780, Francis,
daughter of Thomas Holland of Calvert County.
Her half brothers were Samuel Chew (1737-1790);

John Lane Chew; and William Chew (1746-1801).
Her sister was Sarah Lock (1761-?), who married
in 1789 Nathan Lane. Her half sister was Eliza-
beth Chew, who married first, (first name un-
known) Smith, and second, (first name unknown)
Sprigg. Mary subsequently married William Lyles
(?-1790). CHILDREN. SONS: John Thomas; Phile-
mon; Upton Sheredine; Hamilton; and Capt.
Alexander Hamilton (ca. 1769-1799) of the ship
Argent, who never married, and who died as a
result of wounds received in an engagement with
French privateers in Algeciras, Spain. DAUGH-
TERS: Mary Hamilton; Sarah Lock Chew, who
married on May 4, 1806, Enoch Magruder Bur-
gess, a merchant. PRIVATE CAREER. OCCUPA-
TIONAL PROFILE: physician. PUBLIC CAREER. LEG-
ISLATIVE SERVICE: Lower House, Calvert County,
1779-1780. LOCAL OFFICE: justice, Calvert County,
commissioned 1769, 1773, 1783, and 1784 (quo-
rum, 1773). WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. PERSONAL

PROPERTY: assessed value £1,700.13.4, including
33 slaves and 94 oz. plate, 1783. LAND AT FIRST
ELECTION: 250 acres in Calvert County inherited
from his father. SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN LAND

BETWEEN FIRST ELECTION AND DEATH: probably

purchased ca. 236 acres in Calvert County by 1783.

SMITH, DAVID (ca. 1739-ca. 1813). BORN: ca.
1739 in Cecil County; only son. NATIVE: at least
second generation. RESIDED: in Elkton, Cecil

County. FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER: John Smith

(?-1772) of Cecil County, a farmer. MOTHER:
Margaret. SISTERS: Sarah; Ann; Elizabeth. MAR-
RIED Martha. CHILDREN. SONS: Dr. James; John
D.; and William Haslett, a merchant in Baltimore
City in 1802. PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: lit-
erate. RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Anglican, North
Elk Parish, Cecil County. SOCIAL STATUS AND
ACTIVITIES: Esq., by 1774; Gent., by 1793. OC-
CUPATIONAL PROFILE: possibly a planter; attor-
ney, admitted to practice in the Cecil County Court
in 1780; officeholder. PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLA-
TIVE SERVICE: 9th Convention, Cecil County, 1776.
LOCAL OFFICES: justice, Cecil County, commis-
sioned 1772, 1773, 1774, 1777, resigned 1778; reg-
ister of wills, Cecil County, 1777-1813. STANDS
ON PUBLIC/PRIVATE ISSUES: manumitted two fe-
male slaves in 1803, stipulating that their children
were to be manumitted at age 25 and that all
subsequent issue of such children were to be man-
