as a free adult, probably from the Eastern Shore
of Virginia. RESIDED: in Monocan Hundred,
Somerset County. FAMILY BACKGROUND. No link
could be found between this legislator and the
descendants of Anthony West (?-1652), who es-
tablished a prominent family in Accomack County,
Virginia. There was a Thomas West (?-1708/9)
of Somerset County, whose son John was under
18 years of age at his father's death. MARRIED on
April 27, 1685, Katherine (1664-1722/23),
daughter of Randall Revell (1613-1686/87). Her
brother was Randall Revell, Jr. (ca. 1661-1718).
Her half brothers were Edward Revell (ca. 1638-
1681/82); John; both of Accomack County, Vir-
ginia. Her sisters were Sarah (1667-?), who mar-
ried in 1687 Nathaniel Horsey (1664/65-1721),
son of Stephen Horsey (ca. 1620-1671); Hannah,
who married in 1681 Stephen Horsey, Jr. (ca.
1651-1722), son of Stephen Horsey (ca. 1620-
1671); and Anne, who married in 1678 William
Coulbourn, Jr. CHILDREN. SONS: John (1686-?);

(1693-1731), who married Ann; William (1696-

WEST, STEPHEN (1727-1790). BORN: on July
23, 1727, in Anne Arundel County; elder son.
NATIVE: second generation. RESIDED, in Annap-
olis, Anne Arundel County, until 1754; the
"Woodyard," Upper Marlborough, Prince
George's County, from 1754 until death. During
a visit to the "Woodyard" in 1777, Ebenezer Haz-
ard remarked that "this seat is really elegant, and
the gardens vastly neat, an agreeable air of gran-
deur runs through the whole." The estate was
originally estalished ca. 1692 as the home of Henry
Darnall (ca. 1645-1711) and patented as "The
Delight of the Darnalls." It was conveyed to Ste-
phen West's wife by her uncle, a London mer-
chant. FAMILY BACKGROUND. FATHER: Stephen
West (1682-1752), merchant, innholder, and ferry
keeper of London Town, Anne Arundel County,
son of John West of Horton Parish, Bucking-
hamshire, England; married first, on August 21,
1712, Elizabeth (?-1725), daughter of Samuel
Maccubbin. MOTHER: Martha (1708-1752),
daughter of Rev. Henry Hall and wife Mary Du-
val. UNCLE: Henry Hall (1702/3-1756). BROTH-

Moore; Mary Magdalene (1731-?), who married
on March 29, 1752, Richard Moore; Rebecca Ann
