EXECUTIVE COUNCIL

November 24, 1783-November 24, 1784

Jeremiah Townly Chase (R) Gabriel Duvall (R) James Brice (R, E, Dcl)

John Hoskins Stone Benjamin Ogle (Dcl) John Davidson (E)
Charles Wallace (E) Samuel Turbutt Wright (E) Aquila Paca (E)

1 Barnes was elected president on December 23, 1783, to replace Daniel Carroll who was indisposed, but Barnes de-
clined to accept the position. Charles Carroll of Carrollton was then chosen.

2 In accordance with conditions specified in the will of his uncle, Charles Carroll, Barrister, Nicholas Maccubbin
changed his surname to Carroll by Act of Assembly.

3 Chase, Duvall, Brice, Stone, and Ogle were elected to the Council on November 24, 1783. Ogle, however, declined to
accept, and both Chase and Brice resigned during December. On December 26, 1783, Governor Paca wrote to the Gen-
eral Assembly suggesting that since the Council had only two remaining members, not a quorum, the Assembly should
select the necessary replacements. Accordingly, on that date, the legislature elected Davidson, Wallace, and Wright.
When Duvall resigned in July 1784, the Council reelected Brice to fill the vacancy. When Brice declined to serve again,
Paca was elected in August 1784.
