ARCHIVIST OF THE HALL OF RECORDS

HALL OF RECORDS COMMISSION

The Hall of Records Commission is an ex-officio body created by
Chapter 18, Acts of 1935. Its present membership is as follows;

HONORABLE HERBERT R. O'CONOR, Governor...........................Annapolis

HONORABLE J. MILLARD TAWES, Comptroller of the

Treasury ....................................................................................Crisfield

HONORABLE D. LINDLEY SLOAN, Chief Judge Court

of Appeals..........................................................................Cumberland

MR. STRINGFELLOW BARR, President of the St.

John's College..........................................................................Annapolis

HONORABLE GEORGE L. RADCLIFFE, President of the

Maryland Historical Society.................................Baltimore

DR. J. HALL PLEASANTS, President of the Board of

the Peabody Institute..............................................................Baltimore

DR. ISAIAH BOWMAN, President of the Johns Hopkins

University ................................................................................Baltimore

No meeting of the Commission was held during the year. Such
business of the Hall of Records which requires action of the Legislature
has had to be postponed to the 1945 session and other matters which
normally are settled by consultation between the Chairman of the Com-
mission and the Archivist have also been postponed as there has been
no Chairman of the Commission since the death of Judge Bond. A
meeting of the Commission is required in order to elect a new Chairman.

The death of Judge Carroll Taney Bond, Chief Judge of the Court
of Appeals, removed from the Commission its first Chairman. Judge
Bond, who had had a large part in the creation of the Commission and
of the Hall of Records, was elected Chairman at its first meeting in 1935.
He continued to serve in this postition until his death January 18, 1943.
During these many years his interest in the Hall of Records never failed.
He understood its purpose and its problems and he was ever ready to
give his time and his counsel to its work. He will be sorely missed.

Judge D. Lindley Sloan was named by Governor O'Conor to the
Chief Judgeship of the Court of Appeals on January 27, 1943, to suc-
ceed Judge Bond. By virtue of this appointment he becomes a member
of the Hall of Records Commission. Judge Sloan's lifelong interest
in Maryland and its antiquities makes his choice an exceedingly fortunate
one for the Hall of Records,
