merchandise intended for transportation on the rail-road, must be
deposited, is in Pratt street, a short distance from Light street
wharf. 2d. The Baltimore and Susquehanna Rail-Road is to
extend from this city to York, Pa. a distance of fifty-nine miles
and a half. Concerning the advantages of these rail-roads we
have already spoken.

Post Office,—The Baltimore city post office, is on the norik
east corner of North and Fayette streets. The rates of postage,
established by law, are as follows:

On single letters, not exceeding 30 miles 6 1-4 cents.
Do. do. over 30 and not exceeding 80 miles 10
Do. do. over 80, do. do 150 do. 12 1-2
Do. do. over 150, do. do 400 do. 18 3-4
Do. do. over 400, do. do 25
Double letters, or those consisting of two pieces of paper,
charged double these rates. Triple or quadruple letters in the
same proportion.

Letters, which weigh an ounce or more, are charged with
quadruple postage, per ounce.

Letters or packages delivered at the same post office where
they are lodged are charged with one cent postage.

Ship letters, if delivered at the office of the port where the
vessel arrives, pay six cents postage, but if conveyed from thence
by mail to any other place, only two cents in addition to the ordi-
nary rates of postage.
