MARYLAND.

The total population of Maryland is 1,295,346. Of this number 1,062.-
630, or 82%, are white, and 232,250 or 17.9% are colored.

In 12 of the 23 counties. Negroes constitute more than one-fourth of
the population. In Charles County they constitute more than half the
entire population, or 52.3 per cent.

VOTERS.

There are 367,008 males 21 years of age and over; 82.5% white, and
17.4% colored.

SCHOOL ATTENDANCE.

There are of all races 388,496 children of both sexes of school age. 6
20. Of this number 227,024. or 58.4%. are attending school.

The numer of colored children of school age is 73,230. Of this num-
ber 38,417. or 52.5%. are attending school.

ILLITERACY.

The total number of Illiterates for the entire state was 73,307. or
7.2% of the entire population, ten years of age and over.

There were 42,289 colored Illiterates, or 23.47% of the entire colored
populatlon ten years of age and over.

HOMES OWNED.

12.008 homes owned by Negroes in entire state; 933 homes owned by
Negroes of Baltimore.

Of seventy-three cities having a colored nopnlatlon of 5.000 or more.
Baltimore stands next to last in rank, with 91 persons for each home
owned. Newlwrn. N. C.. leads with a home owned for every 12 colored
Inhabitants.
