HON. O. E. WELLER

The Republican Party has nominated the above named gentleman for Senatoria.
honors to represent the State of Maryland in the United States Senate in the
National Capitol. Mr. Weller is a man of wide experience, gained through training
and travel. He is a graduate of the Naval Academy—a lawyer, banker, financier
and a man of affairs. He is a Marylander by birth and therefore well versed in the
needs of the State and the people of the State. Mr. Weller was forced to quit the
activity of a business career on account of ill health but not before he had acquired
a competency which placed him beyond the reach of want and financial embarass-
ment. Much of his time, during this period, was spent in travel which has added
wonderfully to his fund of information, the benefit of which he has given to his
native State in the public office of as Chariman of the Roads Commission. In this
capacity he served for 4 years and accomplished the practical completion of that
wonderful public road system which has been a subject for congratulation and ad-
miration by the thousands of travellers who happen to pass through our State.

The ability and impartiality with which he discharged the duties devolving upon
him challenged the confidence and esteem of the whole people of the State, to such
an extent that during the period of his incumbency two Democratic legislatures put
in his custody some $16,000,000 to spend, every dollar of which was expended without
the slightest suspicion of graft, and a return to the State of one hundred cents' worth
of value for every dollar spent. This accomplishment stands as a mute testimonial
to his constructive and administrative ability.

As Candidate for Governor

In 1915 he became the Republican candidate for Governor, and such was the
appreciation of the people of the State for his services that he polled the largest
vote ever cast for a Republican candidate for a.ny office within the State.

Mr. Weller has succeeded the late Wm. F. Stone to the leadership of the Republi-
can Party in the State of Maryland and in this difficult position, like all of his
predecessors he has made friends as well as enemies. During the three efforts to
pass measures through the Maryland Legislature, for the purpose of disfranchising
the colored people of the State, Mr. Weller was among the most ardent opposers of
the Measures and not only contributed to their defeat financially but by active
participation with the men who manufactured public sentiment in opposition to
their passage.
