the benefits that might be derived from such a road, unless the land communication from Cumberland to inter-
seel or meet one of the great turnpike roads from Baltimore is made more convenient than the present roads
afford.

Without public aid, your committee are of opinion, those roads will not materially be mended. The applica-
tion of a sum of money to this purpose, out of the revenue of the state, would, in "the opinion of the commit-
tee, be adviseable, and leave ought to be given to bring in a bill for this purpose.

ORDERED, That the same have a second reading on Tuesday next.
The clerk. of the council delivers the papers required by the resolution of this day. ORDERED, That the
same be referred to the committee appointed to bring in a bill to regulate and discipline the militia of this state.
The clerk of the senate delivers the supplement to the act, entitled, An act for the relief of sundry insol-
vent debtors, passed at November session, eighteen hundred and three, endorsed, " will puss. " Ordered to be
engrossed. The bill to restrain the evil practices of certain persons within this state, endorsed, will pass
with the proposed amendments; " which amendments were read. And the resolutions in favour of David Hop-
kins and. Jesse Jarrett, and the resolution directing the auditor to report on the case of William Amos, senior,
severally endorsed, " assented to. "

The following resolution was read the first and second time by especial order and assented to.
RESOLVED, That the. members of this house will convene in the chamber of the house of delegates at eleven
o'clock to-morrow morning, for the purpose of attending the funeral of the honourable Alexander Contee Han-
son, late chancellor of Maryland.
The house adjourns until Monday morning 9 o'clock.

The amendments proposed to the bill to restrain the evil practices of certain persons within this state, were
read the second time, agreed to, and the bill ordered to be engrossed.

The following message was read and agreed to, viz.

BY THE HOUSE OF DELEGATES, January 20, 1806.
GENTLEMEN OF THE SENATE,

WE send back the resolution in favour of Robert Halkerstone, which was rejected by you, in hopes, on re-
consideration of the same, it will meet with your approbation. We assure you, that nothing but the situation of
this unfortunate gentleman, with an impression that he can derive no benefit from the provisions made by con-
gress for the disabled officers and soldiers, induces us to solicit your attention again on the subject. The relief
contemplated in the resolution, can only secure to an indigent meritorious officer a very slender support during
his life; and his peculiar case, of not being able to bring his proof, (though manifest to us, ) within the prin-
ciples and rules of evidence prescribed by the acts of the general government, urges us to make such provision
for him as his misfortunes, arising from his former valuable services, recommend him to.

On motion, Leave given to bring in a bill, entitled, An act authorising Henry Howard, late sheriff and col-
lector of Anne-Arundel county, to complete his collection. ORDERED, That Mr. Watts, Mr. Smoot and Mr.
Linthicum, be a committee to prepare and bring in the same.

The bill to streighten the road known by the name of the York Road, within Harford and Baltimore coun--
ties, was read the second time, and the question put, Shall the said bill pass? The yeas and nays being re-
