We have no objection to making the inquiry proposed, and have appointed Mr. John H. Thomas, Mr. Bland,
Mr. Dorsey, Mr. Stansbury and Mr. Sappington, on the part of this house, to form a committee, in conjunction
with the gentlemen named by your house, for that purpose.

The following leave was read.
Leave to bring in a bill, entitled, An act for the valuation of real and personal property within this
state.
Mr. Chapman, from the committee, delivers to the speaker a bill, entitled, An act for the relief of John
Garner, of Charles county; which was read the first time and ordered to lie on the table.
A report of the trustees of Charlotte Hall School was read, and referred Lo Mr. Parnham, Mr. P. Stuart,
Mr. Chapman, Mr. Dorsey and Mr. Beall, to consider and report thereon.
ORDERED, That the bill to repeal all such parts of the act, entitled, An act to regulate and discipline the
militia of this state, as require each noncommissioned officer and private, liable to militia duty, to arm himself
with a good and serviceable firelock, and for other purposes, have a second reading on to-morrow.
ORDERED, That the supplement to the act, entitled, An act to regulate and discipline the militia of this state,
have a second reading on to-morrow.
On motion, the question was put, That leave be given to bring in a bill, entitled, An act to alter and amend.
the penal laws of this state? Resolved in the affirmative.

The speaker laid before the house a letter from the treasurer of the western shore, stating that the eight per
cent, stock, of the United States will be redeemed on the 1st of January next; which was read, and referred to
the joint committee appointed to examine what is the real and existing situation of the funds of this state.
A petition from Mary Connelly, of Anne-Arundel county, praying to be supported out of the poors house,
was preferred, read, and referred to Mr. Belt, Mr. Hodges and Mr. O. Williams, to consider and report thereon.
Mr. M'Mahon, from the committee, delivers to the speaker a bill, entitled, A supplement to the act, entitled,
An act to incorporate a school in Allegany county, by the name of Allegany County School; which was read
the first time and ordered to lie on the table.
Mr. Belt, from the committee, delivers to the speaker the following report:
THE committee to whom was referred the petition of Vachel Burgess, of Anne-Arundel county, report, that
they find, from documents herewith exhibited, the said petitioner entered into the service of his country at an
early period of the revolutionary war, that he was appointed an ensign in the second regiment of the Maryland
line on the 17th of April, 1777, and that he was afterwards promoted to a lieutenancy, which commission be
resigned on the 22d of August. 1779, from the circumstance alleged by him, and which your committee fully be-
lieve, of an officer of inferior rank having received a commission of a date prior to his. Your committee fur-
ther report, that it also appears from the documents, the said Vachel Burgess was appointed a captain in
the extra regiment raised in the year 1780, in which capacity he served until the said regiment was deranged,
and that during the whole of his service he behaved in a manner highly honourable to himself, advantageous to
his country, and truly characteristic of the American patriot; that the said petitioner is now far advanced in
