CHAP. CV.

January, 1804.
Preamble.

An ACT for the benefit of Joseph Douglas, of Kent county.

WHEREAS Joseph Douglas, a native of Ireland, and now a resident of Kent county, emigrated
to, and settled in, this state, some years past, with a bona fids intention of residing therein,
and has declared his intention in Kent county court to become naturalized agreeable to the laws of
the United States, and has since bargained and contracted for considerable real property; therefore,

Gifts, &c. to
have effect, &c.

II. BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That all gifts, grants, conveyances and
devises of real estates, that shall be made or executed to the said Joseph Douglas, shall have the
same effect, operation and validity, as if the said Joseph Douglas had been naturalised at the time
the same shall be made, executed or entered into; provided always, that nothing in this act contain-
ed shall be construed in any manner to defeat or affect any right, title or claim, to such property, or
any part thereof, acquired by any person or persons before the passage of this act; and provided al-
so, that unless the said Joseph Douglas shall continue to proceed according to law to become a citi-
zen of the United States, this act shall have no effect to confirm his title to the property acquired
as aforesaid, nor shall he, or any person claiming under him, derive any benefit under this act; but
if the said Joseph Douglas shall die before the time when, by the laws of the United States, he
might become a citizen thereof, nothing in this proviso contained shall prevent him from transmit-
ting or transferring his said property, by descent or devise, to any person or persons residing with-
in the United States capable in law to hold the same

CHAP. CVI.

Passed 7th of
January, 1804.

A Supplement to the act, entitled, An act to repair the old or to
build a new poor-house in Anne-Arundel county.

Preamble.

WHEREAS it is represented to this general assembly, that the commissioners appointed for
Anne-Arundel county bv the act of November session, eighteen hundred and one, entitled,
An act to repair the old or to Build a new poor-house in Anne-Arundel county, have agreed for and
purchased an house, and tract of land adjoining, for a poor-house in said county, and doubts may
arise whether the proceedings of the said commissioners are conformable to, and consistent with,
the aforesaid act ;

Proceedings
confirmed, &c.

II. BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the proceedings and contract of the
said commissioners of Anne-Arundel county, in the purchase made of William Caton of the house
and land called Strawberry Hill for a poor- house for the said county, be and the same are hereby
confirmed and rendered valid, and that the levy court of the said county be and they are hereby au-
thorised and directed to levy and assess on the said county the sum of two hundred and fifty dollars,
to complete the payment for the said property so purchased.

CHAP. CVII.

January, 1804.

An ACT to authorise a lottery to raise a sum of money for the pur-
pose of repairing the protestant episcopal church in All-Hallows
parish, in Anne-Arundel county

A scheme may
be proposed,
&c.

BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That it shall and may be lawful for William
Brogden, William Steuart, Samuel C. Watkins, Jonathan Sellman, Leonard Sellman, Osborn
S. Harwood, Janus M'Cullock, Richard Hall, of Edward, and Joseph Harwood, or a majority of
them, to propose a scheme or schemes of a lottery for raising a sum of money, not exceeding two
thousand dollars, and to sell and dispose of the tickets thereof; provided the said William Brogden,
William Steuart, Samuel C. Watkins, Jonathan Sellman, Leonard Sellman, Osborn S. Harwood,
James M'Gullock, Richard Hall, of Edward, and Joseph Harwood, or such majority of them as shall
undertake to aft under this law, shall, before the sale or disposal of any ticket or tickets in said lot-i
tery, give their bond to the state of Maryland, in the penalty oi four thousand dollars, conditioned V
that they will well and truly apply so much of the money arising therefrom, within six months after \
the Rawing of the said lottery shall be completed, as will satisfy the fortunate adventurers for prizes '^
drawn by them, and after deducting the necessary expences incurred in the said lottery, shall, with-
in twelve months from the time the drawing of said lottery shall be completed, cause 'the balance of1
the money raised by said lottery to be applied to the repairing of the protestant episcopal church in
All-Hallows parish, in Anne-Arundel county, and to the enclosing of the burial-ground of said
church, in the best manner the said sum of money will admit.
