NOVEMBER. LAWS OF MARYLAND.

CHAP.
XXXII.

for erecting and completing a bridge over Octorara creek, at the instance of the levy court of the
county aforesaid, for the payment of which he hath made himself liable to the mechanics and labour
ers by him employed, and praying that the levy court of said county may be authorised and empow-
ered to levy a sum of money to repay him for his services, and to enable him to comply with his con-
tracts with the mechanics and labourers employed in erecting and completing said bridge; and the
prayer of the said petitioner appearing reasonable, therefore.

II. BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the levy court of Caecil county be
and they are hereby authorised and empowered to levy on the assessable property of said county, at
their next meeting for the purpose of laying the levy of said county, such sum of money as may be
due said James Sim on settlement, for erecting; and completing the bridge aforesaid, which sum, so
levied, shall be collected as other county charges are collected, and shall be paid to him by the col-
lector agreeably to the order of the levy court of said county.

CHAP. XXXIII.

Passed Janua-
ry 12, 1805.

An ACT authorising a lottery to raise a sum of money to purchase
a fire engine for the town of Elkton, in Caecil county, and for
other purposes.

Preamble.

WHEREAS it has been prayed to this general assembly, that an act may pass authorising a lot-
tery for raising a sum of money for the purpose of purchasing a fire engine and apparatus for
the town of Elkton, in Csecil county, and for the improvement of the streets of said town;

A scheme may
be proposed,
&c.

II. BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland^ That David Smith, Tobias Rudulph, Sa-
muel Briscoe, William Alexander, John Groome, John King, James Partridge, William Rollings-
worth and George Mitchell, or a majority of them, be and they are hereby authorised to propose a
scheme of a lottery for raising a sum of money, not exceeding one thousand dollars, for the purposes
aforesaid, and to sell and dispose of the tickets therein.

Bond to be
given, &c.

III. AND BE IT ENACTED, That the said David Smith, Tobias Rudulph, Samuel Briscoe, Willi-
am Alexander, John Groome, John King, James Partridge, William Hollingsworth and George Mitch-
ell, before they proceed to the sale of any ticket or tickets in said lottery, shall give bond to the state
of Maryland, in the penalty of three thousand dollars, conditioned that they will well and truly ap-
ply the money arising therefrom, within ninety days after the drawing thereof, to the payment of the
prizes drawn therein to the adventurers to whom they shall be due, and the necessary expence in-
curred in the management thereof, and within six months thereafter shall apply the residue, or so
much thereof as shall be necessary, to the purchase of a fire engine, and whatever balance may be
remaining, to the improvement of the streets of said town.

To be lodged in
the clerk's of-
fice, &c.

IV. AND BE IT ENACTED, That the said bond shall be lodged in the clerk's office of Caecil county,
to be there recorded, and upon such bond, or any office copy thereof, suit or suits may be instituted
for any breach or non-compliance with the condition thereof.

CHAP. XXXIV.

Passed Janua-
ry 12, 1805.

An additional supplement to an act, entitled, An act to improve and
repair the streets in Frederick-town, in Frederick county, and for
other purposes therein mentioned.

Preamble

WHEREAS it is represented to this general assembly, by the petition of sundry inhabitants of
Frederick-town, in Frederick county, that the market-house in said town is out of repair, and
requires enlarging, and that the town clock suffers much injury for want of funds to employ a person
to attend to and keep the same in repair, and they prayed that an act may pass authorising the com-
missioners of said town to levy a sum of money on the assessable property of said town, and the ad-
ditions thereto, for the purposes aforesaid; therefore,

Commissioners
to lay a tax,
&c.

II. BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the commissioners of said town, or
a majority of them, be and they are hereby authorised and empowered to lay an equal tax on the as-
sessable property "in said town, and the additions thereto, not exceeding the sum of two shillings and
six-pence current money in every hundred pounds worth of assessable property, For the purposes of
repairing and enlarging the market-house in said town, and employing a suitable character to attend
to and keep the town clock in said town in repair, which said tax shall be collected and paid to the
