378 LAWS OF MARYLAND.

NO. 3.

Joint Resolution requesting the Secretary of War to direct
the Army Engineer Corps to make a survey of the feas-
ibility and estimated cost of a tunnel under the Chesa-
peake Bay from a point at or near Sandy Point, in Anne
Arundel County, to a point in the vicinity of Stevens-
ville, on Kent Island.

WHEREAS, there has, for some years, been considerable
discussion as to the desirability of having a bridge or tun-
nel to connect the Eastern and Western Shores of Mary-
land; and

WHEREAS, all possible methods of improving transporta-
tion within the State should be investigated from the
standpoint of serving the greatest number of people most
advantageously, not only for the present but for the future;
and

WHEREAS, the Sandy Point to Kent Island route is the
shortest distance across the Chesapeake Bay, as well as
probably the most advantageous to the greatest number
of people; and

WHEREAS, before finally deciding upon the construction
of a bridge, it would seem desirable to have an accurate
survey made as to the feasibility of constructing a tunnel
under the Bay; therefore

Be it resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That the Secretary of War of the United States be and he
is hereby requested to direct the Army Engineer Corps
to make a survey as to the feasibility and estimated cost
of a two-way under-water tunnel or tube under the Chesa-
peake Bay, from a point at or near Sandy Point, in Anne
Arundel County, to a point in the vicinity of the town of
Stevensville, on Kent Island; and

Be it further resolved, That the State Roads Commission
and all other state departments and officials be and they
are hereby requested to place at the disposal of the said
Army Engineer Corps any information or data in their
possession and to cooperate in every way possible in the
making of such survey; and

Be it further resolved, That the Secretary of State be
and he is hereby directed to send copies of these resolutions
