380 LAWS OF MARYLAND.

NO. 5.

A Joint Resolution endorsing and commending the Triple
Anniversaries Observance, during the week of Septem-
ber 12th, 1937, of three events in Maryland History, be-
ing the 200th Anniversary of The Settling of Washing-
ton County, the 175th Anniversary of The Founding of
Hagerstown, and The 75th Anniversary of The Battle of
Antietam, and authorizing and requesting the Governor
of Maryland to appoint a State Committee and an Inter-
state Committee to co-operate with, advise, and assist the
Washington County Historical Society in preparing for
and directing such observance.

WHEREAS, In the development of the State of Maryland,
what is now known as the County of Washington was first
settled along the Conococheague Creek in the year 1737,
and

WHEREAS, The City of Hagerstown, the county seat of
the said Washington County, was founded by Jonathan
Hager in the year 1762, and

WHEREAS, The Battle of Antietam, one of the most mem-
orable battles of the Civil War, was fought on Maryland
soil near Sharpsburg in the year 1862, and

WHEREAS, The Washington County Historical Society,
a body corporate of the State of Maryland, in its sponsor-
ship of a fitting anniversaries' observance of these three
important historical events in Maryland history is most
creditably upholding the historical traditions of our State
and Nation.

Therefore be It resolved, That the Legislature of Mary-
land, in Special Session assembled, hereby endorses the
proposed triple anniversary observance and commends the
Washington County Historical Society for its efforts in
advancing and promoting a recognition of the significance
of these three important events in the history of our State
and Nation.

And be it further resolved, That the Governor of Mary-
land be and he is authorized and requested to appoint a
State Committee and an Interstate Committee to co-operate
with, advise and assist the Washington County Historical
Society in preparing for and directing such observances.
