officers, and remain in office until their successors are elected
and qualified.

729. In case of a vacancy in the office of Mayor, by death
or otherwise, the Vice-Mayor shall hold the office of Mayor
during the unexpired term, after taking the oath of office as
required of the Mayor; and the Council shall elect a successor
to fill the unexpired term of the Vice-Mayor by a majority
vote of their number. The person so elected shall, within three
days, qualify as hereinafter provided; and if such person shall
fail to so qualify another election shall be held, and so on until
the vacancy is filled.

731. At the same time and in the same manner as provided
for the election of Mayor and Vice-Mayor, there shall be
elected five Councilmen, whose qualifications shall be the
same as those of the Mayor and Vice-Mayor. The Vice-Mayor
and Councilmen shall each receive for his services twenty-five
cents for each regular or called meeting at which he shall be
present; whenever one or two vacancies may occur in the office
of Councilmen, such vacancy shall be filled in the same manner
as that provided for in Section 729 in the case of Vice-Mayor;
but should three or more vacancies occur at one time the
Mayor shall order an election to be held in conformity with
the provisions for regular elections, to fill the unexpired terms.
Any person wishing to be a candidate for the office of Mayor,
Vice-Mayor or Councilman shall file a petition with the Mayor
of the town not less than ten (10) days before the time for
holding any town election, indicating the officer for which he
is a candidate and only the names of those persons who so file
shall be placed upon the ballots or voted upon at said election.

SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That wherever the word
"Burgess" occurs in any of the Sections 725 to 752 of said
Article 22 of the Code of Public Local Laws of Maryland
(1930 Edition), the word "Mayor" shall be used, and wherever
the word "Assistant Burgess" occurs the word "Vice-Mayor"
shall be used, and wherever the word "Commissioners" occurs
the word "Council" or "Councilmen", as the case may be,
shall be used, to the same extent as if said words had been
originally included in said sections.

SEC. 3. And ~he it further enacted, That this Act shall take
effect June 1, 1941.
