CHAP. 204.

ceipt of such list, the said register shall deliver or send to the
sheriff of the proper county a list of such taxes, to be collected
and accounted for as aforesaid.

• 5. And be it enacted, That the register in chancery shall, on or
before the first day of November annually, account with and pay
'to the treasurer of western shore all money received by him
c for taxes which may arise for services done in the said court for
persons who do not reside within the state, a list of which the said
register shall annually lay before the general assembly; and in
settling such account the. said treasurer shall allow to (he said re-
gister a commission of four per cent, on the amount of money by
him received, and also at the rate of ten cents per side for keep-
ing an account of the taxes imposed, mid for copies of the list
laid before the general assembly, and sent to the several sheriffs
as directed by this act, and the act to which it is a supplement.

Section of former
act repealed.

6. And be it enacted, That the fifth section of the act, entitled,
An act for establishing and securing the salary of the chancellor,
passed at November session one thousand seven hundred and nine-
ty two, chapter seventy-six, so far as the same is inconsistent with
the provisions of this act, and the act to which it is a supplement,
be and the same is hereby repealed.

CHAP. CCV.

An Act for the benefit of the Free School in Anne-Arundel County.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the
trustees of the free school in Anne Arundel county, for the time
being, shall he and they are hereby authorised, to permit any per-
son who may hereafter occupy the land belonging to said free
school, to cultivate tobacco thereon, if in their judgment the in-
terest of the school will be promoted thereby, any law to the

contrary notwithstanding; Provided always, that this ant shall
not be construed to permit the clearing of any land not hereto-
fore cleared.

CHAP. CCVI.

An Act for the benefit of John Mercer.

WHEREAS John Mercer, of Anne-Arundel county, has acquired
by marriage the ownership of a female mulatto slave named Ju-
lia, residing in that part of the District of Columbia, which is on
the south side of the river Potomac, and is desirous of removing
her into this state; Therefore,

1 Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the
said John Mercer be and he hereby is authorised to remove the
said female mulatto slave into this state, at any time within one

year from the passage of this act, and the removal of said slave
shall not operate to entitle her to freedom; Provided, that the said
slave shall be recorded in the records of Anne-Arundel county
within three months after her being removed as aforesaid into
this state, and nothing in this act shall he construed to authorise
the said John Mercer to make sale of said slave within three
years after her removal.
