appoint, annually, a person of intelligence, integrity and firmness, as
keeper to the Penitentiary of Maryland.
2. And be it enacted, That it shall not be lawful for the Governor
and Council to appoint as keeper to the said Institution, any agent,
clerk or deputy keeper of the said Penitentiary, whilst he is acting as
such, or for one year from the time he may resign such appointment,
any law to the contrary notwithstanding.

CHAPTER 207.
An act to divorce Amelia Maddox and Samuel H. Maddox, her husband of the
City of Baltimore.
Sec. 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland, That
the said Amelia Maddox, be, and she is hereby divorced from bed,
board, and mutual cohabitation, with her husband Samuel H. Mad-
dox.

Passed Feb.
26. 1824.
Divorce.

2. And be it enacted, That the said Samuel H. Maddox, shall not
by virtue of his marriage with the said Amelia Maddox, be authori-

sed to have or claim, any right or interest in the estate, real, personal
or mixed of the said Amelia Maddox, to be by her acquired after the
passage of this act.

Prohibition
of authority.

3. And be it enacted, That the said Samuel H. Maddox, shall not
exercise any acts, of authority or control over the children of the said
Amelia Maddox, his wife, any law to the contrary notwithstanding.

Of guar-
dianship.

CHAPTER 208.

An act to authorise an exchange of certain Lots of Ground lying in the City of
Baltimore.
Sec. 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland, That
Charles C. Browne, executor of the estate of the late Elizabeth Law-
son, and George Williams, guardian of Susanna Mary Williams, be,
and they are hereby authorised to exchange lots or parts of lots in
their discretion, situated on North-street, in the City of Baltimore,
so that the estate of said Lawson, may have a front on said street,
said the said Susanna Mary Williams, may have a lot extending
through to an alley running parallel to the said street.

26, 1824.
Exchange
authorised.

2. And be it enacted, That after such exchanges have been agreed
on between the aforesaid parties, the lot or part of a lot accepted by
the said Charles in exchange, shall be conveyed by the said George,
to the said Charles, and shall be held by the latter in the same right,
and under the same limitations and qualifications as exist now with
regard to the lot, or part of a lot so given in exchange; and the lot,
or part of a lot accepted by the said George in exchange, shall be con-
veyed by the said Charles to the said Susanna Mary Williams, and
shall be held by the said Susanna in the same right, and under the
same limitations and qualifications as exist now with regard to the
lot, or part of a lot so given by the said George for the said Susanna
in exchange.

CHAPTER 209.
An act to authorise the Banks in this state to invest a part of their capital in
public stocks of the United States.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the se-
veral banking institutions in this state, be, and they are hereby autho-
rised and empowered to invest such part of their actual capital paid
in, in the present stock of the United States, or in any stock which
may hereafter be issued by the United States, as they, have now ves-
