Sec .2 And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1959.

CHAPTER 613
(House Bill 34)

AN ACT to add new Sections 257 to 307, inclusive, to Article 41 of
the Annotated Code of Maryland (1957 Edition), title "Gov-
ernor—Executive and Administrative Departments", to follow im-
mediately after Section 256 thereof and to be under the new sub-
title "Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Regulation Com-
pact", to establish on the part of the State of Maryland a Compact
with the Commonwealth of Virginia and the District of Columbia
to be known as the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Reg-
ulation Compact which creates the Washington Metropolitan Area
Transit District and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit
Commission for the regulation of and planning for mass transit
by a single agency in the metropolitan area of the District of
Columbia; to prescribe the powers, functions and duties of the
Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Commission; to create a
Traffic and Highway Board as an advisory adjunct to the Wash-
ington Metropolitan Area Transit Commission; to provide for the
enforcement of this compact and the rules, regulations and or-
ders of the Commission, and for appeal from actions of the Com-
mission; to provide for the execution of the compact; to provide
for the payment of the expenses of the Commission; to provide
for repeal, amendment and termination of the compact; and to
provide that the effectiveness of the compact shall be dependent
upon the consent of the Congress of the United States; all for
the improvement of transit and traffic in the Washington metro-
politan area.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That new Sections 257 to 307 inclusive, be and they are hereby
added to Article 41 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1957 Edi-
tion), title "Governor—Executive and Administrative Departments",
said new sections to follow immediately after Section 256 thereof
and to be under the new sub-title "Washington Metropolitan Area
Transit Regulation Compact", and all to read as follows:

257.  The Governor is hereby authorized and directed to execute on
behalf of the State of Maryland, a compact with the District of Colum-
bia and the Commonwealth of Virginia, which compact shall be in
form substantially as follows:

258.   Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Regulation Compact.

the State of Maryland, and the adjacent suburban area of the Com-
