CHAP.

LV.
Minifters may
convene, &c.

III. And be it enacted, That it fhall and may be lawful for the minifters of
the Roman catholic religion within this ftate, citizens thereof, exercifing their
minifterial functions agreeably to the rules and difcipline of their church, and in
whole favour the faid declaration fhall have been made, to convene at a place to
be by them agreed on, within twelve months from the paffing of this act, and
then and there adopt fuch regulations for the management of their eftates and
temporalities, as fhall feem fit and advifeable to a majority of the minifters fo-
convened; and the faid minifters, or a majority of them, fo met, fhall then and
there choofe, from their own body, certain perfons, not lefs than three nor more
than five, who fhall affume the ftyle, name and title, by which they are to be
defignated and known, and fhall certify the fame, under their hands and feals,
within three months thereafter, to the clerk of the general court of the weftern
fhore, who is hereby authorifed and required to record the fame in the records of
the laws of this ftate, at the expence of the faid corporation, and thereupon the
faid perfons, and their fucceffors, fhall be a body politic or corporate, by the
name and defcription fo affumed by them, for carrying into execution more effec-
tually the regulations aforefaid, and the provifions of this act; which faid body-
corporate fhall immediately be feized and poffeffed, in as full and ample manner,
and of the fame eftate, title and intereft, in law and equity, of all fuch property
then declared in manner aforefaid to be held by any perfon or perfons, upon the
trufts and to the ufes herein before mentioned, or which thereafter fhall be fo de-
clared to be held by any perfon or perfons to the ufes and upon the faid trufts be-
fore the fourteenth day of Auguft, feventeen hundred and feventy-fix, or acquired
fince that period by exchange for property fo held, as the perfon or perfons
making fuch declaration now hold and poffefs the fame; and the faid property,
with the rents, iffues, and profits thereof fhall from thenceforth be under the
fole control and management of the faid corporation or body politic, and their
fucceflbrs, fubject neverthelefs, at all times hereafter, to be taken into the valua-
tion as other property liable to affeffment.

How vacan-
cies are to be
filled, &c.

IV. And be it enacted, That all vacancies, occafioned by death, refination,

or other difqualification, of any perfon conftituting the faid corporation or body
politic, fhall be filled and fupplied, from time to time, by other perfon or perfons
elected or appointed by the minifters of the Roman catholic religion within this
ftate, citizens thereof, and acting agreeably to the rules and directions to be efta-
blifhed at their firft meeting to be held purfuant to this act, or by a majority of
them prefent at fuch election or appointment; and it fhall and may be lawful for
the minifters aforefaid, qualified as aforefaid, to meet as often as may be neceffary
for their general interefts and concerns, or to fill up vacancies oecafioned by death,
refignation, or other difqualification, of any perfons conftituting the corporation
or body politic aforefaid; which faid corporation or body politic, and their fuc-
ceflbrs, fhall be capable of fuing and being fued, impleading and being implead-
ed, in any court of law and equity within this ftate, by their corporate name, in
as full and effectual manner as any other perfon or perfons, bodies politic or cor-
porate, may fue or be fued, implead or be impleaded.

Preamble.

An ACT refpecting the flaves of certain French fubjects.

WHEREAS derangements in the government of France, and fome of
the French Weft-India iflands, have induced feveral inhabitants of
the faid iflands to take refuge in this ftate, with a part of their flaves :
And whereas they have petitioned this, general affembly to be enabled to retain
the faid flaves, and the laws of juftice and hofpitality requiring that men feeking
an afylum for themfelves and property, fhould not be reiufed the fame; therefore,

II. Be it enacted, by the General Affembly of Maryland, That all flaves im-
ported, or that may hereafter be imported, by, and the bona fide property of,
French fubjects, who have removed, or may remove, from any of the French
iflands into this ftate fince the derangements in the French government, and
previous to the eftablifhment of peace in France, and tranquillity in the faid
