providing that jousting be recognized as the official State sport of
Maryland.

WHEREAS, the State of Maryland by legislative act has adopted a
State flower, a State tree, a State bird, a State song, and a State flag;
and

WHEREAS, Jousting, long recognized as the oldest, most colorful,
traditional equestrian sport known to man has thrived in Maryland
since the early colonial days; and

WHEREAS, this sport today is looked upon by many as a real Mary-
land tradition and it has many enthusiastic followers from among
residents all over the State of Maryland as well as from residents
of neighboring states, many of whom come to Maryland each year
to participate in these events; and

WHEREAS, these Jousting Tournaments in Maryland have pre-
served many of the traditional, ancient customs and dignity so long
associated with their medieval counterpart, all of which tends to
make these tournaments popular among visitors to Maryland and
yet the sport has remained untouched by commercialism; and

WHEREAS, the Official Seal of the State known as The Great Seal
of Maryland as described in Article 41, Section 74A of the Annotated
Code of Maryland (1961 Cumulative Supplement) features on the
obverse side a picture of Lord Baltimore adorned in medieval armour,
mounted on a charger depicting the ancient sport of jousting, so that
it seems only proper and fitting that Maryland should set a precedent
by proclaiming jousting as the official sport of this venerable State;
now therefore,

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,

That a new Section 79A be and it is hereby added to Article 41 of
the Annotated Code of Maryland (1957 Edition), title "Governoró
Executive and Administrative Departments, " sub-title "Governor, "
sub-heading "Maryland Sport, " to follow immediately after Section
79 thereof, and to read as follows:

Maryland Sport

79A. The age old equestrian sport of Jousting is hereby pro-
claimed to be the official sport of the State of Maryland.

SEC. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1962.

Approved April 6, 1962.
