(House Joint Resolution 16)

House Joint Resolution requesting the State of Maryland to con-
tribute funds for a Monument to honor the last Confederate
Veteran.

WHEREAS, the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Sons
of Confederate Veterans are sponsoring the placing of a Monu-
ment at Gettysburg to honor the memory of the last Confederate
soldier to die; and

WHEREAS, eleven Southern States are being requested to participate
in this most honorable project; and

WHEREAS, a Monument honoring the last Union Soldier was placed
at Gettysburg in 1957, and it is only fitting and proper that a Con-
federate Monument also be placed at Gettysburg; now, therefore,
be it

Resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the State
of Maryland be requested to participate in the placing of a Monu-
ment at Gettysburg to honor the last Confederate Veteran who died.
The Governor is requested to provide a budgetary item in the
amount of one thousand dollars, as the contribution by the State
of Maryland to the total cost of the monument, including expenses
involved in the dedication ceremony; and be it further

Resolved, That the Secretary of State of Maryland be directed to
send a copy of this Resolution under the Great Seal of the State
of Maryland to the Georgia Hall of Fame Committee, Atlanta,
Georgia.

House Joint Resolution Commending and congratulating Lieutenant
Colonel John H. Glenn, Jr. on his outstanding achievement in
becoming the first American to orbit the earth in space flight.

The members of the General Assembly of the State of Maryland
wish to congratulate and commend Lieutenant Colonel John H.
Glenn, Jr. on his outstanding achievement in becoming the first
American to orbit the earth in space flight.
