CHAPTER 189
(House Bill 80)

AN ACT to add new Section 98A to Article 77 of the Annotated Code
of Maryland (1957 Edition), title "Public Education," subtitle
"Chapter 7. Schools," to follow immediately after Section 98 there-
of, providing for a daily period of silent meditation for the students
of every public elementary and secondary school in the State and
relating also to prayers, OR the reading of scripture. -, and the free
exercise of religion in the public schools.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That new Section 98A be and it is hereby added to Article 77 of the
Annotated Code of Maryland (1957 Edition), title "Public Educa-
tion," subtitle "Chapter 7. Schools," to follow immediately after Sec-
tion 98 thereof, and to read as follows :

98A.

Principals and teachers in every public elementary and secondary
school in this State shall
MAY require all students at these schools
to be present and participate in opening exercises on each morning
of a school day and to meditate silently for approximately one mo-
ment; provided that no student or teacher shall be prohibited from
reading the holy scripture,
OR praying, or any other expression of
the free exercise of his religion.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1964.

CHAPTER 190
(House Bill 154)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 24 of
Article 36 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1957 Edition),
title "Fees of Officers," subtitle "Registers of Wills," and to repeal
and re-enact with amendments Section 175 of Article 81 of said
Code, title "Revenue and Taxes," subtitle "Inheritance Tax," in-
creasing the commissions to the several registers of wills for receiv-
ing and paying over any inheritance tax due the State, and cor-
recting errors in said Section 24.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 24 of Article 36 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1957 Edition), title "Fees of Officers," subtitle "Registers of Wills,"
and that Section 175 of Article 81 of said Code, title "Revenue and
Taxes," subtitle "Inheritance Tax," be and they are hereby repealed
and re-enacted, with amendments, to read as follows:
