1694                                      VETOES

the words "deputy sheriff" would require a plate twelve inches by
eighteen inches.

If this type of registration were pursued throughout the State,
it would require the issuance of several hundred special oversized
tags. This is true since there are many persons designated as deputy
sheriffs throughout the State and, in fact, many of the county sheriffs
appoint deputies who have no real official duties but are appointed,
to a large extent, on a courtesy basis. Under this legislation, a sheriff
could have a special plate issued to a friend to be displayed on his
privately owned vehicle simply by designating that friend a deputy
sheriff.

I would also like to point out that the request for the issuance
of special tags on publicly owned vehicles is unusual and that many
law enforcement agencies request conventional tags to hide their
identity therefore making it easier for them to enforce the law. In
some cases, these law enforcement agencies request that the tag
number be kept confidential because of the nature of their work.

Because of the objections outlined above, I feel that it would be
undesirable for me to place my signature on this legislative Act.

With kindest personal regards, I am

Sincerely yours,

(S) J. MILLARD TAWES,

Governor.
