1772                            JOINT RESOLUTIONS

Whereas, The American Legion has achieved its position of high
esteem through its programs of service to community, state, and
Nation; and

Whereas, The Maryland General Assembly desires to recognize
the devoted unselfish service the American Legion, Department of
Maryland, has rendered to our State and its communities for 50
years; and

Whereas, The bridge linking the State of Maryland with the
Commonwealth of Virginia over the Potomac River on Interstate
495 (Capital Beltway) adjacent to the Maryland community of
Cabin John, has never been officially named; and

Whereas, Most of the bridges which cross the Potomac within
the Capital Beltway have been named as memorials (Woodrow
Wilson Memorial Bridge, Key Memorial Bridge, Arlington Memorial
Bridge) except the aforementioned bridge on Interstate 495 at Cabin
John; and

Whereas, The aforegoing bridge on Interstate 495 spans not only
the Potomac River but the George Washington Memorial Parkway,
named in honor of the father of our democracy; now, therefore be it

Resolved, That by The General Assembly of Maryland, in recogni-
tion of the golden anniversary of the American Legion, Department
of Maryland, urge the State Roads Commission to consider naming
the bridges (north and south lanes) linking the State of Maryland,
and the Commonwealth of Virginia on Interstate 495, the Capital
Beltway, at the community of Cabin John, Maryland, the "American
Legion Memorial Bridge," and be it further

Resolved, That the Secretary of State is directed to send copies
of this resolution to the Chairman of the State Roads Commission
and to the Commander of the American Legion, Department of
Maryland.

(Senate Joint Resolution 55)

Senate Joint Resolution, to request the Maryland State Roads Com-
mission to study the need, feasibility and priority of adding the
Baltimore-Washington Expressway into the interstate highway
system, and that no action be taken to add the Baltimore-Washing-
ton Expressway into the interstate highway system before March
31, 1970.

Whereas, The Maryland State Roads Commission is presently
constructing right lanes of the interstate expressway known as I-95,
between the Baltimore and Capital Beltways (I-695 and I-495); and

Whereas, The portion of I-95 so under construction generally
parallels the existing Baltimore-Washington Expressway; and
