JOINT RESOLUTIONS
Joseph Curran, Jr., the admiration and respect of the
General Assembly for the life and accomplishments of
Councilman Curran, and the deep regrets of every Member
of the General Assembly over his passing. Approved March 31, 1977.
No. 3 (House Joint Resolution 11) A House Joint Resolution concerning The Employment of Illegal Aliens FOR the purpose of supporting any federal legislation
that would make employment of an illegal alien a
punishable offense. The U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service
estimates that there are six to eight million people of
foreign birth living and working illegally in the United
States, and that presently 65,000 of these illegal aliens
reside within the State of Maryland. The U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service
estimates that these illegal aliens cost the citizens of
the United States $12—20 billion in welfare payments,
unpaid taxes, and lost wages from the jobs these aliens
hold. Present federal law is inadequate to cope with this
situation since it penalizes only the alien and not his
employer and, therefore, does not discourage future
employment of other illegal aliens; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF MARYLAND, That
we as a Body support any legislation enacted by the
federal government that would make employment of illegal
aliens a punishable offense under federal law; and be it
further RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution shall be
sent to all members of the United States Congress and to
the President of the United States. Approved March 31, 1977.
