AN ACT concerning

Advisory Commission on Sports

FOR the purpose of abolishing the Special Advisory Commission on

Professional Sports and the Economy; establishing an

Advisory Commission on Sports within the Department of

Economic and Employment Development; providing for the

membership, terms, officers, meetings, compensation, and

powers of the Commission; and generally relating to the
establishment of an Advisory Commission on Sports.

Preamble

WHEREAS, The General Assembly in 1984 established the
Special Advisory Commission on Professional Sports and the
Economy to advise the Governor and the General Assembly on the
retention, expansion, and location of professional sports
franchises in the State, among other duties; and

WHEREAS, The passage of legislation in the 1987 Session
setting the site of a new stadium or stadia in Baltimore City at
Camden Yards, and establishing the method of financing of this
stadium or stadia, has accomplished 1 of the major goals and
objectives of this Special Advisory Commission; and

WHEREAS, The General Assembly in 1987 created the Division
of Tourism and Promotion within the Department of Economic and
Employment Development to, among other things, promote amateur
and professional sports in the State, thereby recognizing and
acknowledging the importance of the economic, fiscal, and social
impact of amateur as well as professional sports; and
