    Bond to
The State of Md
Know all men by these presents  That we
John Orem, Alfred Hearn, Samuel Ridgley jr
John L Law all of Howard County and State
of Maryland are held and firmly bound unto
the State of Maryland in the full and just sum of
Thirty seven hundred and fifty dollars current money to be paid to the
said State of Maryland or to its Certain Attorney or assigns to which
payment well and truly to be made and done we bind ourselves
and each of us our and each of our heirs executors and administrators
jointly and severally firmly by these presents.  Sealed
with our seals and dated this third day of May in the
year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty nine
Now the condition of these presents the above obligation is
such that if the above bound John Orem shall well and
faithfully execute his office as collector of the state taxes
and shall well and truly account for and pay over to the
treasurer of the State of Maryland the several sums of money
which he shall receive or be answerable for at such times as
the law directs then this obligation to be null and void
otherwise to remain in full force and virtue

May the 3.rd 1859.  The within bond is approved by the

Know all men by these presents that we
Christian Close, Barbara Ann Close
Greenberry Gaither and Catharine Gaither
and Artemus Hearn all of Howard County
and the state of Maryland do hereby manumit
and set free our negro slaves Cain about thirty five
years of age his freedom to commence from the date of these
presents.  Witness our hands and seals this tent thirtyeth day
of April in the year of our Lord Eighteen hundred and
