The above mentioned is a true Coppy of a paper sent to
Patuxen the abovesaid day p: M^r lames Biggers
p M^r Edward Pye.

You are hereby commanded to keep ten or twelve men in
Armes to Range the woods betweene patuxen and patomack
till the provintiall Court be over or till further order from the
Council and upon any discovery of Indians appearing in
Hostile manner to give speedy notice thereof to the Council
And likewise to have a Deligent Eye upon the motions of the
Virginians and if they should attempt a landing on this side to
use your Endeavour to prevent their Attempts And signify the
same to the Council with all speed For all wch doeing this
shall be your warrant Given under my hand and seale this
28^th day of March 1689:

I am to acknowledge the favour of yours and Coll Jowles
Letter which I received by the hands of M^r Clarke and indeed
it is of that moment that it speaks peace and quiet to the dis-
turbed minds of our Inhabitants violently carried into ruinous
Imaginacons partly moved by their owne inclinations and
incouraged thereunto by the inconsiderate and over hasty
intelligence of some of your province And that you may be
knowing that I speak not this by guess M^r Clarke has taken
coppies of two letters of two Gentlemen of Charles County
which when you have read you will conclude them (as I doe)
to be of that consequence as to move moderate and consid-
erate persons And therefore of power sufficient and violently
to stirr up the rash and heady mobile But I thank God I
have now a fair sight of order from confusion For (even now
by a post come from Stafford I have received Intelligence
that the feares and Jealousies of the people there is much

abated, And as you have with all prudence mannaged and gov-
erned the uneasie minds of your people soe wee have not
been wanting here to give them the best satisfacon wee could
and to take off the Clamours against Capt Brent and to justify
his innocency wee ordered his house to be searched for Armes
and Amunicon and directed him to take up his being at Coll
Fitzhughes where the people might be assured he could not
converse with any designing any ill against the Inhabitants
wee have also the last weeke ordered some people to be
ranging for the security of the Inhabitants And as wee have
not bin wanting in our care for the preservation of the peace
and quiet of this Country soe wee shall be as watchfull in the
