NOTES.

Page 12, line 32. " understands his wife " should be " from his wife."

Page 13, line 23. " as you have." Apparently, "as he hath."

Page 46, line 12. " Yerule" is a scribe's error for "J. Ernie." The
members of the Council are: Jeffreys, Lord High Chancellor; Sir John
Ernley, Chancellor of the Exchequer; Robert, Earl of Sunderland,
President of the Council; John, Lord Belasyse, First Lord of the
Treasury; Sidney, Lord Godolphin, and Henry, Lord Dover, Lords of
the Treasury; Charles, Earl of Middleton, Secretary of State, and
William, Duke of Hamilton, Councillor.

Page 47, line 41. " greate," " seal" omitted.

Page 64, line 15. " pieces of eight," i. e. Spanish dollars.

Page 65, line 31. This and the following letter seem to be to
Effingham.

Page 75, line 19. "all that" for "all heat."

Page 102, line 39. "over" for "ever."

Page 107, line 7. Original torn.

Page 107, line 30. " Wm" is an error for "Nha," i. e. Nehemiah.

Page 108, line 7. "promises" for "premises."

Page in, line 32. The B is Blakiston's mark.

Page 118, line 44. "Nicholas" for " Michael."

Page i2i, line 32. "Nicholas" for "Michael."

Page 127, line 14. "Maryland" for "Virginia."

Page 159, line 28. "Jackahick." Apparently some sign or token
intelligible to the Indians.

Page 164, line 47. "take that" for "take order that."

Page 172, line 19. "Scharnecksteed," i.e. Schenectady.

Page 173, line 5. "St.Tophars" for "St. Christopher's."

Page 184, line 14. "Vivian" for "Ninian."

Page 184, line 23. "the 90th." Apparently for "the 2d, 90."

Page 189, line 18. "dethired" for "desired."

Page 196, line 5. "Vivian" for "Ninian."

Page 206, line 30. This letter is apparently addressed to Gov.
Nicholson.

Page 220, line 19. "Lordspps." The final s is probably a terminal
flourish of the original scribe.

Page 222, line 28. "ps of 8." Spanish dollars.

Page 236, line 40. There are evidently many errors in the names
on these lists, but it is idle to make conjectural corrections.

Page 251. The original of this record seems to have been nearly
illegible. The P. R. O. copy is full of errors.
